Within a typical sci-fi film the characters can be greatly
different to help with the setting or storyline. The characters within the film
tend to reflect typical storylines, by either having them be very mundane and
be introduced to something much more scientifically advanced than them, or have
them be in the future and used to the storyline. With films such as superhero
Marvel films like Doctor Strange, or thrillers like The Lawnmower Man having
this idea of regular people encountering scientific technology far beyond their
time and this can be used to discuss the potential ideas science could bring.
The opposite, seen in films that take place where the advanced science is
commonplace, such as The Hunger Games and the Star Wars trilogy’s. They are
often grand and brave heroes and villains, never simply civilian regular lives,
this is due to how much of a huge new universe they have to explore in the
entirely new setting that having the hero be a civilian will be boring or
unappealing.
