Suicide Squad is a 2016 American superhero film based on the DC Comics antihero team of the same name. It is the third instalment in the DC Extended Universe and revolves around a secret government agency led by Amanda Waller who recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions and save the world from a powerful threat, in exchange for leaner sentences. Suicide Squad is written and directed by David Ayer and stars an ensemble cast consisting of Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, and Cara Delevingne
The films begins with the Warner Bros. and DC logos in the Suicide Squad graffiti/run down style, the DC logo begins to spin closer towards the screen that then dissolves into the next shot which is an establishing aerial shot of the Belle Reve Special Security Barracks surrounded by miles of swamps/lakes. A caption in the lower right corner reading 'Black Site, Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, USA' is used because it helps establish the exact location of this scene for the audience. We then cut to the next shot, this is a medium shot of a military truck within the compound grounds passing in front of the camera along with four heavily armed soldiers walking in conversation. Throughout this shot the camera tracks into a close up of a piece of artwork/graffiti on the barrack walls, this is of a skeleton figure in a hooded robe behind prison bars who's holding onto them almost as if begging to be let out, the artwork is accompanied by text which reads 'Welcome to Belle Reve, Till Death Do Us Part, Special Security Barracks' this implies to the audience that whoever we're about to meet must be very dangerous and must of committed a very serious offense to be sent to such a high security prison as well as being sentenced to life for life.
We then cut to a medium-long shot of a darken room with one of the prison guards watching several monitors covering the entirety of the prison. One of the screens feature a shot of Deadshot's cell which we then cut to, we see the character of Deadshot (Played by Will Smith) working out and boxing against a punching bag while working up a sweat, this shows that even though he is in prison he's keen to keep in shape. We then see a long shot of Griggs, an officer at Belle Reve's Special Security Barracks, walking towards a locked security gate inside the prison, followed by again two heavily arms officers he passes through and proceeds to shout 'Chow Time' aimed towards the inmates to let them know that its time for dinner, as a guard unbolts the hatch of Deadshot's cell door the camera pans with Will Smith's character as he walks towards the door in a rather aggressive manner, almost as if to intimidate Griggs (Played by Ike Barinholtz) by saying "Only my friends call me Floyd" to which Ike Barinholtz's characters reply's "You ain't got no friends Floyd" trying to provoke a reaction from him, almost mocking him in a sense. We then see a close up of Griggs handing through a piece of loaf and after Deadshot asks what it is he proclaims "It's Load, it's got a little bit of pasghetti in there. Toenails. Rat shit. Everything a grown fella needs, like you" he uses this to mock Deadshot but mainly again to provoke a response which this time he does, in every shot we see Griggs from behind the cell door which represents his defences and a sense of safety which allows him to be cocky and sarcastic towards Deadshot but we also see the character of Deadshot from behind the cell door which represents in imprisonment and institutionalization. As Deadshot approaches even closer to the cell door wanting to tell Griggs a secret, he then declares in a deep, twisted, whispering and threatening manner that "One day... Somehow, some way, I'm gonna get outta here. And I'm gonna rain down on you like the holy ghost" having just threatened Griggs, he warms him that he's just threatened a staff member to which he reply's do something, we then cut to a close up of Grigg's face as he says "Let's have some fun" while saying this he begins grinning is a slightly twisted and demonic way, almost as if he gets a kick of out beating up and causing pain towards the inmates. A medium shot shows Will Smith's character being forced onto a chair as guards begin to beat him for threatening Griggs, as this continues we cut to a few different shots of the prison from CCTV cameras, with the shot changing everything time one of the officers take a hit towards Deadshot (Rhythmic editing) with the final shot being a low angle, medium-long shot of Harley Quinn's cell.
This is a low angle, medium shot of Harley Quinn's prison cell surrounded by mesh fences topped with barbered wire, unlike the other prisoners Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie) is held within a steel cage which is also surrounded by barbered wire mesh fences that symbolises her imprisonment and institutionalization but can also be linked to gender representation within media areas and how women aren't treated as equal as men, for instance; how Deadshot has his own cell whereas she's kept in a cage, treated almost like an animal. Similar to earlier on, Griggs enters followed by a group of heavily armed guards, the camera cuts to a high angle shot as Griggs walks towards the gate demanding it to be opened. Margot Robbie's character is presented in a highly sexualised manner towards Griggs, this is shown by having Harley in the centre of the shot but higher up, looking down on Griggs in a sexualised manner before sensually swinging down towards the cage bars. After an exchange of dialogue between Griggs and Harley, one of the guards electrify the bars sending her flying towards to floor in a small burst of sparks which kicks into a flashback/dream sequence of when Harley first entered the Belle Reve Special Security Barracks.
We then flash to a long shot and close up of Harley sat in the corridor crying and laughing mentally, this is used to show the characters instability but to also allow the audience to sympathise with the character as we see her surrounded by a group of male soldiers towering over her representing that they are the dominant party. We then cut to a long shot of another corridor with Harley strapped into an old wooden chair while being force fed Forcevite - Total Meal Replacement. The effects used in this scene represent to the audience that this is in fact a flashback sequence as the footage begins to distort and warp along with the original colour of the footage being faded and replaced with a mix of pinks and blues, we cut the several more shots of the Forcevite being administered to Harley Quinn via tubing, we also see Grigg's taunting Harley Quinn who is obviously in a sheer amount of pain and being tortured, this sows that Griggs is quite a sick, twisted character as he is seen getting a kick out of it which then flashes back to the scene of Harley laid on the floor, representing that the flashback/dream sequence is over.
