Title Sequence Analysis
For my title sequence I chose to analyse "X-men: First Class" (2011), as it relates to the ideas of superhuman ability's and the way in which people would use them, for good or bad. It also followed the similar idea of people gaining powers without asking for them, as the main character of our film did.
The premise of the film "X-men: First Class" can be seen throughout the title sequence, as it presents imaginary of human DNA and the different mutations within it, showing X and Y chromosomes, as well as a helix DNA structure, with cells dividing all around the screen. The repetition of the X in each cell diagram connotes to the name of the film, as well as the themes throughout it, that being the genetic differences between people giving some powers, and how this random act effects people. In addition, the vibrant colours that streak behind the moving animations, which reflects not only the fact that the film is based on a comic book, origination in the 1960's, which often has bright colours involved in them, but also the setting of the film, which was 1963, a time in which colours like this were seen in clothes, art and newspapers. This is also the point in which the directors name is shown, at the very beginning of the sequence.
The sequence then continues with more X cell imaginary, in different patterns, showing the names of crew members involved, such as producers, executive producers and casting crews. Later on, the connection of DNA strands are presented, with the lead actors names attached to the end of them. This again follows the themes of genetics, and how everyone is different, as each one of the DNA strands presented are different in some way, reflecting the messages of the film through the sequence.
The company's involved are presented at the very end of the sequence, with the same style of animation, with symbols and dots darting around the screen in no real pattern, similar to the way in which DNA strands and cells move around under a microscope. The sharp cuts and transitions match well to the dramatic and villainies score accompanying it, provoking a nervous feeling from the audience, as this is quite uncommon imagery from a film.
The sequence ends with the films title presented around different cell types, following the same theme of the other aspects of sequence, with the added effect of a more simplistic presentation, as its simple black background and film name reflects the idea of the film, a more stylized and story driven installment in to the "X-men" franchise.
