The settings usually used in sci-fi are the very pristine
clean space ships like Star Trek and Passengers, or the laboratory setting. They
can also use the generic settings such as major cities or suburban towns.
Sci-fi often is able to insert itself into any setting due to how it’s what the
characters do that can make it sci-fi, but also where the characters are. If characters
are in space for the majority of the film then it can often be classified as a
sci-fi film, even if the technologies are current, seen in the film Apollo 18.
Setting is a very clear factor for sci-fi and can completely change how the message
of the film is addressed, films such as The Hunger Games can often have thinly
veiled philosophical messages that are covered up by not taking place today but
instead far in the future.
