'What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?'
Having previously discussed and researched into which potential distributor we could use for our film we again had to think about the genre of the film, the audience it appeals to as well as the size of the audience as to whether it would be better using a mainstream or independent distributor.
Focusing on the independent company, we decided that Warp films would be the best choice because they are based within Sheffield and are an independent film production and distribution company which focus more on real life, gritty issues and context in comparison to the romanticised Britain that is portrayed in films by the big six. Warp Films might be attracted to our film because its very similar to previous films they've produced and distributed such as; This is England (2006) and Submarine (2010) as it focuses more on the characters and the story they have to tell rather then focusing on big budget special effects and CGI scenes. Also using an independent company would give us more control over what happens with the film and wouldn't be pressured into making any changes to the film that we didn't see necessary or be changed to appeal to a mainstream audience meaning we'd be able to keep the film exactly how we wanted.
But using a mainstream company, mainly one of the big six, would profit our film greatly. Universal would be a great choice, not only because they are one of the big six but also because they are a very popular film company producing and distributing a wide range of films with a lot of successful franchises behind their name, with franchise such as; The Back to the Future Trilogy (1985- 1990) and The Jurassic Park series (1993 - Present). We'd also be allocated a larger budget, way larger then any independent company could give towards our film along with the large amount of publicity have a well know backer and larger budget, all this would allow our films to feature famous actors, bigger sets and top of the range special effects and CGI. Along with all these large positives to having a big six backer there are some negatives, for instance; we might lose some control over our film with Universal wanting to change scenes, characters, age rating and story line to appeal more to their audiences which would mean our film wouldn't originally be produced the way we intended.
