Evaluation - Question 3



Question 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

When discussing the different possible distributes for our film we had to consider the genre of film we are producing, its age rating and size of audience, and the types of film that film company develops. Having this in mind, we decided that our film would be best received with either Warp films or Warner Bros Pictures, two contrasting company's.  

Warp films would be a good choice to distribute our film as they are a local independent company based in Sheffield that focus largely on topics that relate to its area, and their for the audience it is most likely to impact, making our Barnsley setting  a possible interest to them at it is around the same area. As well as this, the fact that the actors involved in our film are all from around the area, it would relate more to the target audience, as they are the same kinds of people, that being people from the north. Another important idea to consider would be that as our film revolves more around characters and their interactions together than special effects and sci fi set pieces, like some of Warp films other projects, such as '71' and 'Submarine', the budget needed would be much smaller than other films, which works well with the low key and independent company. Due to its smaller size, by being distributed by Warp, our age rating would be able to be higher than at other company's, to around a 15, allowing us to stick the our original idea for the movie, giving us more control.       

On the other hand, another good option for a company to distribute our film is Warner Bros Pictures, a very successful film company that is one of the big six. I believe Warner would be a good distributor as many of their films follow a dark and gritty plot, such as 'Suicide Squad' and 'Clash of the Titans', two very successful films, while our film also follows this dark theme, as it involves murder, crime and drug use. Due to this however, our age rating would have to be lowered, as Warner Bros are such a large and influential company, they aim to make as much money as possible, leading to a lower age rating to impact a larger audience, compromising our films original ideas, leading us to have to change scenes and plot elements to gain this rating, leaving us with a much lower amount of control. In contrast however, due to their size, Warner would be able to issue us with a much higher budget, allowing us to add more special effects and digital technology's, increasing the 'wow factor' of the film.
