Evaluation - Question 2

Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our story, a young couple, aged in their early twenties, find a young man around the same age passed out in a park. After they get him to wake up, they take him home to care for him and make sure he is ok. To represent these social groups, that of young adults, we added details to follow some set stereotypes to present these groups to the audience easier. We had them dressed in modern fashionable clothes to represent the idea of young peoples care for how they look, and their reliance on being fashionable while in public. At the same time we subverted the stereotype of anti social behaviour, as they go to save the passed out character, showing their care for him, which is the opposite of what is seen for young people. This was also added on later in the film, when they are back in their house, caring for him, asking him questions and giving him drinks. We used certain camera angles and types, such as medium shots, in a way that projected light on to the two of them, connoting the image of positivity towards the audience for the young couple. 

Our representation of male characters followed both the stereotypes for men, with 'macho' men, as well as more caring representations of males. The character of Jarrod, the man in the couple, we subverted the stereotypes for men, as we had him shouting out to the passed out man, and making him drinks to look after him, the opposite to the 'macho man' idea, showing a more human aspect without ego involved. We also dressed him in a more relaxed and modern outfit, to accompany the representation of a 'modern man' which we wanted to present. For our other male character, Kian, we followed a more 'classic' male presentation, as he embodies the protagonist role, saving the couple from the mugger, following the more traditional roles in action films.

We decided to follow a common presentation for our female character, using well known stereotypes to present this to the audience. She is shown as being caring and helpful towards the protagonist while she and he boyfriend care for him in their house. Furthermore, the clothes that she wore was similar to her boyfriends, in the sense that they both were wearing modern clothes, to represent they are young people in the 21st century. This also linked in with the idea of the stereotypical image of women being emotional, as when the protagonist is shot, she covered her mouth in shock.
