How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our film has a very male dominant cast, with only one woman in the cast who acts as a girlfriend character. This is apparent in a lot of other sci-fi superhuman films where only one or two women will be in the entire cast, such as Black Widow in the Avengers franchise, and won’t be the main antagonist/protagonist, such as the women in the X-Men franchise.

 

This is reflected in our film, with Danni being the only woman character who doesn’t really standalone outside of her and Jarrod, and she falls into the idea of being the girl who is caring and nurturing, even towards people she hasn't ever met, like when the her and Jarrod find Kian. As well as this, Jarrod is much more interrogative when they find Kian, showing him being defensive. Despite this we didn’t fall victim to making any social group particularly represented be seen as ‘better’ than other. We also delve into the social groups of criminals, who we represent as the main antagonist. We represent Frank as such by use of fast paced editing, dramatic music, and a gun prop. This is actually the first impression we get of Frank, so he is immediately portrayed as a character who is capable of murder, vilifying his criminal status right off the bat.

 

Despite the genre, we present all the characters as general young people to appeal to that audience of 16+ who we feel would be interested in the crime and superhuman element of our film, through use of costume to dress all the characters in regular clothing, which is unconventional for the genre. We also use regular music and sound for the majority of the film aside from the ending, this separation from the rest of the film tells the audience that things aren’t what they seem, leading onto the superhuman genre.
